Soho Teahouse

103 Sullivan Street, New York NY 10012

The design of Sorate Teahouse was conceived collaboratively by founder Silvia Mella and the architectural expertise of Studio Architecture Amaa.

A combination between the meditative soul of Japanese matcha and the lively and frenetic heart of Soho has been reached in the first Sorate flagship store in town. The existing structure, freed from the latest additions and coverings, represents indeed the backbone of this perfect match: the site offered the chance to rediscover the original materials of an early 20th century building, in particular the richness of the traditional tin ceiling which appears now as a striking visual element.

Beside the diversity in shapes and materiality, a neutral hue has been then chosen to achieve a relaxed homogeneity of the shell. Within this set essential and functional elements define the perception of the inside: a long blue counter (brand color is blue) occupies the longitudinal shape of the store like a stone, as opposed to the wooden display, which closes the space with its peculiar geometry of the perfect circle, a nod to the origin of the brand.

Moreover, the big window in the front gives continuity between inner and outer life: attractive hints of what is happening during the ritual preparation of matcha tea are offered to the curiosity of passers-by.
