Flatiron Teahouse
The design of the new Sōrate Teahouse in Flatiron was shaped by founder Silvia Mella and the Venice-based studio AMAA. The space reflects a dialogue between the meditative essence of Japanese Teahouses and the vibrant rhythm of Manhattan. Carrying forward the language of the SoHo location, the Flatiron Teahouse features four counter seats, a dedicated to-go counter, and a striking long blue counter — sculptural in form, echoing Sōrate’s signature color. Like the tea ritual itself, the design embraces natural materials, avoiding plastics in favor ofhandcrafted, sustainable tools and containers. Venetian plaster walls, this time in a deep blue tone, contrast with the soft sand hues of SoHo.
Distinctive design elements include a traditional Tokonoma, a recessed alcove found in Japanese
Teahouses, and a custom Ajiro ceiling, woven from thin strips of bamboo or wood into intricate geometric patterns that reflect the Japanese spirit of harmony with nature and attention to details.
Fresh seasonal flowers, arranged weekly in the style of ikebana, further animate the space—reminding guests to observe the passage of time and to find beauty in change.
