How It Works

To make a clean slate, start with the detox. 

Researchers at the University of Maryland showed that green tea has been proven to flush out harmful toxins, boost energy levels, and promote better health. Especially when taken in the morning, green tea can reset the body and mind. The green tea detox is advertised as a way to clear up blemishes, enhance immune function, and increase fat burning by simply adding a few servings daily. It also decreases inflammation and has antioxidant benefits to improve digestion, heart health, and aging effects. 

Typically, this detox involves adding three to six cups (0.7–1.4 liters) of green tea to your normal daily diet, however; you will get significantly more out of the detox, by following our plan on cutting out certain foods. 

Guidelines on the length of the detox vary, but it’s generally followed for several weeks, at the very least. 

Beyond a detox, green tea has long been touted as a healthy drink for people struggling to lose weight.

One year-long study in 173 women found that drinking more water alone was associated with greater fat loss, regardless of diet or exercise. Another study in 23 adults, found that consuming green tea extract increased fat burning during exercise by 17%, compared to a placebo.

One showed those who consumed green tea over a 12-week period and while sticking to their regular diet, still lost an average of 2.9 pounds, and the increase in calories burned by around 100 calories over a 24-hour period.

Countless studies have proven that compounds found in the green tea plant, act to decrease body weight and support weight loss maintenance. The flavonoids, catchins, and caffeine, to name a few, help elevate metabolic rate, increase fat oxidation and even improve insulin activity.

Similarly to the detox, experts say for four of five cups of green tea per day combined with a healthy diet plan in order to lose weight. Weight loss benefits vary based on different dynamics, but they have been found by drinking as little as two and a half cups per day. While a long-term constant intake of green tea has been proven to benefit in many ways, drinking tea this way for just a few weeks is unlikely to have much of an impact. Furthermore, although adding green tea to your diet may result in small and short-term weight loss, it’s unlikely to be long-lasting or sustainable once the detox ends. Green tea should be viewed as a component of a healthy lifestyle, and should be enjoyed as part of a nutritious diet — not a quick fix. Notes:

Matcha green tea is the richest green tea source of nutrients and antioxidants. Registered dietitian Isabel K Smith explains why: “The whole leaf is ground and consumed as part of the beverage, as opposed to other (most) types of green tea where the leaves are steeped and then the tea is consumed.”

When brewing green tea, take a little extra time and care for the process. Boiling water is damaging to the catechins, which are the tea’s healthy chemicals. Instead, bring your water to a boil but let it rest for about ten minutes, then pour the water over the tea and brew for three to four minutes before enjoying. Any more time and your precious green tea may become bitter. 

If you are not used to drinking green tea regularly, doing so an empty stomach may cause nausea. Please don’t be alarmed as this can be a normal part of the detox process.
